The Dr. Martens Story
Dr. Martens shoes and boots have been in production since 1960. Originally made in England, some styles are still made in the U.K. Dr. Martens are known for their long-wearing soles and durable leather.
Klaus Märtens was a doctor in the German army during World War II. While on leave in 1945, he injured his ankle skiing in the Bavarian Alps. He found that his standard-issue army boots were too uncomfortable for his injured foot. So, he designed improvements with soft leather and air-padded soles made of tires.
When the war ended, some Germans recovered valuables from their own cities. Märtens found leather in an abandoned cobbler’s shop and used it to make himself a custom pair of boots with air-cushioned soles. Thus, Dr. Martens boots were born.
